The actions taken by the men and women of IAFF Local 3816, Worthington Professional Firefighters Local 3498, Liberty Township Professional Fire Fighters IAFF 3754 / Powell Ohio, Delaware County EMS, Delaware County, OHIO, Sheriff's Office, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, under extraordinary conditions, saved lives that night. The residents and visitors of central Ohio are protected by professionals who take pride in their calling, and it shows. The Worthington Fire & EMS Unit Citation was awarded to Firefighter/Paramedic Josh Price, Firefighter/Paramedic Zach Smith, and Firefighter/EMT James Pawley for their actions on August 13, 2025, when they responded in Medic 101 to a multi-vehicle crash at U.S. Route 23 and State Route 750 in Orange Township.

The citation was presented on October 31 by Worthington Fire Chief Mark Zambito at a ceremony attended by Orange Township Fire Chief Nathan McNeil and Orange Township Assistant Chief A.J. Miller.

The text of the citation is as follows:

Upon arriving at the scene, they were met with multiple challenges in a chaotic environment. Their quick actions to render care alongside the initial agency on scene for the patients they encountered are a testament to the core values our organization takes pride in.

After assessing the available resources and recognizing the need for immediate action, they began working seamlessly with personnel from the Orange Township Fire Department. The decision was made to separate the crew to provide the necessary medical treatment for two critically injured patients who were extricated from a head-on collision involving multiple fatalities and vehicles that were on fire.

All three members demonstrated professionalism, respect, and compassion in their response to the situation they faced. With the crew split and the need for rapid interventions, they worked exceptionally well with personnel from other agencies. They responded to the hospital in separate medic units, alongside people they had never worked with before. Their courage to make difficult decisions in a critical moment undoubtedly contributed to the care and outcomes of the patients they attended to.

The Division is extremely proud of their actions.

Today, after completing their capstone, three members are one step closer to finishing a year long probatioanry period. This measures their ability to perform essential fire ground operations in a stressful, exhausting 3 1/2 hour exercise. All three passed with flying colors. Thank you to all our partners who helped make today possible.
